SUMMARY:Stride the Line Fundraising Walk at the Spa Valley Railway
DESCRIPTION:Stride the Line!\n\n\nEnjoy a sponsored walk to raise money for the replacement of Broom Lane Bridge!\nThere is another opportunity for you to walk the line\, this time to see our new bridge over Broom Lane! \nBetween 23rd February and 2nd April\, the Spa Valley Railway is undertaking one of the biggest infrastructure projects to date with the replacement of Broom Lane Bridge. \nWe are still fundraising to complete the project\, which will be paid off for a period after the installation. We’d love to welcome you on another walk of the line and be the first people to walk over our brand new bridge! \nMeet at Tunbridge Wells West from 9:00 am on Sunday\, 29th March\, and we will set off at 9:30 am. \nThis sponsored walk is longer than the last; we will be walking to Groombridge station and as far back as High Rocks\, for a total of around 6 miles. Trains won’t be able to cross the bridge during this event\, so we’ll walk over it and continue to Groombridge. After a brief pause (if you would like to)\, you can set off back to High Rocks. \nOur Diesel Multiple Unit will convey people back at intervals from High Rocks on the return\, saving you the final mile of walking back to Tunbridge Wells West. \nEvery penny raised from this walk will go straight towards the Broom Lane Bridge replacement\, reducing the demands on our daily operations. \n\n\n\n\n\nBroom Lane Bridge\nWe started fundraising for this enormous project in January 2025. We have so far raised over £80\,000 thanks to your generosity (as of October 2025). \nWe cannot afford to wait any longer to replace this bridge. If we don’t do it now\, the costs will continue to rise\, and inevitably\, we won’t be able to cross the current structure. \nA decision taken in October 2025 by the Spa Valley Railway’s management\, following very careful consideration\, is that we must replace the bridge. \nFunds from our day-to-day activities and from the Society will help cover a significant portion of the work\, but we still need your help. This walk will help to reduce the demands placed on our bank account. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere will I be walking?\nThe route you will walk is from Tunbridge Wells West to Groombridge\, and you will cross the new Broom Lane Bridge. At Groombridge\, you will turn back and head for High Rocks\, where a train will take you the final mile back to Tunbridge Wells West. \nThe total distance is approximately 6 miles\, slightly longer than our 2025 walk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat should I wear?\nWe recommend wrapping up warm\, as the weather can sometimes be quite cold in March! \nYou must wear suitable shoes for walking on rough underfoot terrain; it is a railway after all\, and the conditions include ballast\, rocks\, vegetation\, slippery surfaces\, and railway tracks. \nChildren and dogs are welcome\, but they must be able to walk over rough underfoot terrain for the entire distance. DESCRIPTION:Broom Lane Beer Festival!\n\n\nA gathering of fine ales and ciders this Spring!\nDo you love Real Ale or Cider and cannot wait until our festival in October? \nWell\, we have a treat in store for you this Friday\, 20th to Sunday\, 22nd March\, as our first ever Spring Ales Festival takes place in our Engine Shed at Tunbridge Wells West\, in aid of our Broom Lane Bridge Appeal! \nAt least 90 ales and 30 ciders will be on offer\, plus live bands performing on the stage for a fantastic atmosphere amongst the trains. As of Thursday\, 26th February\, a selection of 72 ales has been chosen and 32 ciders to start whetting your appetites! Kent and Sussex-based beers have started to appear on the latest list which is available now! \nThis event is on a smaller scale than the festival we hold each October (tickets can be booked now for the big event) and is in aid of our Broom Lane Bridge Appeal. Entry to our main bar at Tunbridge Wells West is FREE; you do not need to buy a train ticket unless you wish to ride down the line. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to expect at our first Spring Ales Festival?\nWe will have around 80 cask ales on the racks in our Engine Shed at Tunbridge Wells West\, along with 30 ciders\, too! The Beer & Cider list is available via the button below and is being regularly updated. \nThe event is on a smaller scale than our October one\, but will still have the great selection and quality of ales we love to bring you from across the UK. \nAs the bridge across Broom Lane will be replaced during this event\, trains won’t be travelling along the whole line\, but every pint you purchase will be reinvested in Broom Lane Bridge! Groombridge and Eridge stations will be closed\, but Tunbridge Wells West and High Rocks will be open. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you new to this and wondering what real ale is?\nCask ale\, also known as “real ale” or cask-conditioned beer\, is a live\, unfiltered\, and unpasteurised beer that undergoes a natural secondary fermentation in its serving cask\, developing soft carbonation and fuller flavour. The beer is traditionally served from a hand pump\, or in our case\, from a tap in the cask. \nAle is made from water\, malted barley\, hops and yeast. Breweries create different flavours by tweaking four main variables: the yeast strain\, which produces fruity\, spicy\, or other flavours; the types and timing of hop additions\, which contribute bitterness and aroma; the grains and malts used\, which provide sweetness\, caramel\, nutty\, or chocolate notes; and the water chemistry\, which affects the overall balance and flavour perception. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLive Bands!\nThere’ll be live bands performing in the Engine Shed on all three days of the event. DESCRIPTION:Green Timetable – Steam & Heritage Diesel Trains\n\n\nTake a steam and heritage diesel train ride through the High Weald!\nEnjoy a train ride with a steam locomotive and a heritage diesel between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge\, calling at High Rocks and Groombridge. You can sit back and relax\, letting the train take the strain\, which is perfect on both damp\, rainy days and bright\, sunny ones! \nOur train tickets are valid for travel all day\, so you can travel up and down as many times as you like\, hopping off at our intermediate stations to explore the surrounding area. \nOn board our trains is a bar or buffet car serving a range of hot\, cold\, and alcoholic drinks\, as well as light refreshments. \nAll children aged 0-15 years travel free of charge on our Green timetable days when accompanied by a full fare-paying adult. \nDuring January and February 2026\, our 10:00 am departure from Tunbridge Wells West and 10:35 am departure from Eridge will not operate; all the other services will operate as planned. The 10:00 and 10:35 services will restart from Friday\, 2nd April. \nBetween Monday\, 23rd February and Friday\, 2nd April\, we are replacing Broom Lane Bridge. Trains will only operate between Tunbridge Wells West and Broom Lane Bridge on a special timetable. Other trains\, such as Steam Driver Experiences\, will operate\, too. \n\n\n\n\n\nBulleid Pacific 34053 ‘Sir Keith Park’\nThe mighty Bulleid\, built at Brighton Works in 1947\, was dedicated by Air Vice Marshall Sir Keith Park\, the locomotive’s namesake\, on 15th September 1947 at Brighton. Saved from scrap and lovingly restored by Southern Locomotives Limited\, the 4-6-2 Pacific returned to steam in 2012. Recently\, the locomotive underwent an overhaul\, which is expected to keep her operating until 2032. \nA powerful Southern Railway locomotive that regularly reached 100mph could be pulling your train when you visit! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaledonian Railway 812 Class 828\nThe stunning Scottish engine\, built in 1899 at St. Rollox Works\, Glasgow. Far away from her native Scotland\, but seeing regular use between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge. \nWill this fine Victorian engine be taking you on a journey through the High Weald? \n\n\n\n\nWhat to see and do along the line?\n\n\n\nTunbridge Wells West\nSince 1606 visitors have been coming to Royal Tunbridge Wells to experience the Chalbeayte Spring. \nIts chance discovery by Lord North\, who was returning to London after a three month stay in the county\, lead to the growth of Royal Tunbridge Wells and also the famous Pantiles. \n\n\n\n\n\nHigh Rocks Station\nThe smallest but probably the most picturesque station on our line\, built from scratch and opened in 1998 following the closure of the original halt in the 50s\, serves the fantastic High Rocks themselves and the delightful Inn. \n*Please check with High Rocks Inn to see if they are open when you are visiting. \n\n\n\n\n\nGroombridge Station\nGroombridge is our principal intermediate station and you can alight here to visit this historic village. It is also possible to walk to Harrisons Rocks where you can see the trains passing by on days we’re operating to Eridge\, and if cycling\, to get to the Forest Way \n\n\n\n\n\nEridge Station\nEridge makes the ideal starting point for a trip along the line. You can arrive by Southern Railway from London or Uckfield\, or turn straight off the A26 road between Crowborough and Tunbridge Wells. Look out for the mainline station signs! Eridge has a 100-space car park. The car park operator uses an app to pay and charges all day\, seven days a week\, but it is cheaper than most town centre alternatives. There is free parking on the road outside the station. \n\n\n\n

You can sit back and relax\, letting the train take the strain and see Bluey either before or after your trip. \nOur train tickets are valid for travel all day\, so you can travel up and down as many times as you like\, hopping off at our intermediate stations to explore the surrounding area. This also means you can see Bluey as many times as you like\, too! \nOn board our trains is a bar or buffet car serving a range of hot\, cold\, and alcoholic drinks\, as well as light refreshments. \nAll children aged 0-15 years travel free when accompanied by a full-fare-paying adult. \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Bluey at Tunbridge Wells West!\nYou can see Bluey in our Engine Shed during your visit\, as many times as you like! Make sure you bring your cameras for opportunities to capture your visit and make amazing memories! \nBluey will appear at 10:40\, 12:10\, 13:20\, 14:20\, and 15:00. \nThese times link up to train arrivals at Tunbridge Wells West\, so you can take a train ride and still get the chance to see Bluey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA real life steam locomotive!\nThe stunning Scottish engine\, built in 1899 at St. Rollox Works\, Glasgow. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Last Cider Event of the Year at Spa Valley Railway this Saturday 25 October 2025\nFollowing the recent success of the Beer & Cider Festival\, cider enthusiasts are offered one final opportunity this year to enjoy a unique experience at the Spa Valley Railway in Tunbridge Wells. \nThe Cider Train is set to depart from Spa Valley Railway’s Tunbridge Wells West Station on Saturday\, 25 October 2025 at 19:00. This promises to be a memorable evening on board a steam-hauled train\, marking the conclusion of this year’s cider and beer festivities. \nTickets and Boarding Information\nTickets for the event are priced at just £5 per person and can be purchased either online or directly at Tunbridge Wells West Station. Once you have secured your ticket\, you will be welcomed aboard the historic train for an evening dedicated to cider tasting. \nCider Selection and Refreshments\nPassengers can choose from a selection of 12 different ciders\, available at £3 per pint and £1.50 per half. These ciders will be served from the bar carriage\, affectionately known as ‘Kate’. In addition to the cider offerings\, a variety of snacks will be on sale onboard\, and guests are also welcome to bring their own food to enjoy during the journey. \nJourney Details\nThe Cider Train will depart from Tunbridge Wells West at 19:00\, with the return journey scheduled to take place between 21:30 and 22:00. DESCRIPTION:Sir Keith Park Rededication Event\nSaturday 13th September \n\n\n\n\n\nThe rededication of Bulleid Pacific 34053 ‘Sir Keith Park’\nVisit the Spa Valley Railway on Saturday\, 13th September to see the rededication of steam locomotive 34053 ‘Sir Keith Park’. \nAir Chief Marshal Sir Keith Rodney Park\nAir Chief Marshal Sir Keith Rodney Park\, GCB\, KBE\, MC & Bar\, DFC (15 June 1892 – 6 February 1975) was a New Zealand-born officer of the Royal Air Force(RAF). During the Second World War\, his leadership of the RAF’s No. 11 Group was pivotal to the defeat of the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. \nSoon after the outbreak of the Second World War\, Park was given command of No. 11 Group\, responsible for the defence of South East England and London. Owing to its strategic significance and geographic location in relation to the Luftwaffe\, No. 11 Group bore the brunt of the German aerial assault during the Battle of Britain. Park’s management of his fighter aircraft and pilots helped ensure that Britain retained air superiority along the English Channel. \nBulleid Pacific 34053 ‘Sir Keith Park’\nBuilt at Brighton Works in 1947\, the locomotive was dedicated by Air Vice Marshall Sir Keith Park\, the locomotive’s namesake\, on the 15th September 1947 at Brighton station on the same day as classmate 21C167 ‘Tangmere’. \nAllocated to Salisbury MPD\, 34053 spent considerable time on loan to Stewarts Lane depot\, where it was recorded hauling the heavy Continental boat expresses\, including the Golden Arrow on many occasions. Following brief spells at Nine Elms and Exmouth Junction\, it returned to Salisbury in 1951\, working over the entire South Western network. In November 1958\, the locomotive was rebuilt\, and its air-smoothed casing was removed. It returned to the Salisbury MPD. \nThe rebuilding solved most of the maintenance problems whilst retaining the excellent features of the original design. Repair costs were reduced by up to 60%\, and coal consumption was reduced by up to 8.4%. A final transfer in 1960 saw it operating out of Bournemouth depot\, and at times it traversed the Somerset & Dorset at the head of the Pines Express. \n34053 was withdrawn in October 1965 and towed to Barry scrap yard in South Wales the following March. Its arrival was delayed by several weeks\, as some connecting rods in 34053’s tender struck a bridge near Chandler’s Ford. The convoy of locos\, which also included 76068\, was left at the east siding of Romsey station for several weeks. 34053 arrived at Woodham’s scrap yard in Barry during March 1966. \nRededication Ceremony\nThis will take place at Eridge station between 13:30 and 14:15. 34053 will then haul the 14:35 service from Eridge. \nDining Trains\nSeveral dining experiences are operating on Saturday\, 13th September. SUMMARY:Diesel Gala Weekend at the Spa Valley Railway
DESCRIPTION:Diesel Gala!\nFriday 8th\, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th August – With Class 09 09004 & visiting Class 47 47580! \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for three days of heritage diesel action between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge!\nStep back to the 1970s and 80s when classic diesel traction operated trains all across the United Kingdom.  \nJoining us this year for the first time is a Class 47 in the form of 47580 ‘County of Essex’\, visiting us courtesy of the Mid Norfolk Railway. This will be the first time a Brush Type 4 has been seen on the Spa Valley Railway and indeed the first time a member of the class has ever operated between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge. \nAlso joining us at our Diesel Gala is Class 09 09004\, also known as D3668\, which was a resident at the Spa Valley Railway between 2003 and 2009. The 09 is being loaned to us for at least one year to support our operations. 09004 will work alongside 08922 during this event. \nJoining 09004 and 47580 is our shunters Drewry 2591 ‘Southerham’\, Class 08922\, plus Class 25 25185\, Class 31/4 31430 ‘Sister Dora’\, Class 73/1 73140 and Class 207 DEMU 1317. \nThis event marks the last time Class 73/1 73140 will operate trains at the Spa Valley Railway\, as the owners have sadly decided to relocate to another heritage railway. This is not something the Spa Valley Railway wants to see\, but we respect their decision. We will mark the occasion by having 73140 operate all three days\, allowing you to enjoy this classic Electro-Diesel locomotive for the last time along our line. \nIf you’ve ever fancied having a go at driving a locomotive\, then for just £20 you can take to the controls for a short distance at Tunbridge Wells West or Eridge during this event. We also offer Morning Rover and Afternoon Rover tickets at a slightly cleaper price\, which are valid for unlimited travel between the times shown on the tickets. \nUnlimited travel means you can travel on any Spa Valley Railway service that day or between the times shown on your eTicket. \nBritish Railways Class 47 Diesel-Electric Type 4 47580 ‘County of Essex’\nThe British Railway Class 47\, also known as Brush Type 4\, is a class of diesel-electric locomotive built by Brush Traction at its Falcon Works and Crewe Works between 1962 and 1968\, with a total of 512 produced.  \nThe class was designed to operate passenger trains\, including Intercity services\, and freight workings. They soon became a common sight across the whole country\, with the majority being allocated to Crewe\, Cardiff Canton & Bescot. They quickly\, alongside the Class 37s\, became one of the mainstays of the BR fleet and promptly earned their reputation as a powerful and reliable class of locomotive. By 1986\, only five out of the original 512 had been withdrawn from service\, all due to serious accident damage. However\, with the introduction of new rolling stock and spare parts becoming scarce\, the decision was made to start withdrawing the class slowly. However\, by 1995\, only 147 locomotives had been withdrawn\, still leaving 360 in service. With the privatisation of the railway\, many of the locomotives were acquired by private operating companies and used for either freight or charter services. However\, as newer technology became available\, they were being replaced from 1996 to 2006\, with an average of 15 locomotives taken out of service each year. \n\n47580 was released from Brush Works on 1st September 1964\, originally as D1762\, and allocated to Tinsley (41A). In August 1979\, it was named “County of Essex” and held this name until August 1993\, when it was then renamed as “Restormel” in 1995. Throughout its working life\, it was transferred to March\, Immingham\, Finsbury Park\, Stratford\, Bristol Bath Road\, Crewe & Toton. 47580 was then withdrawn from traffic by its owner\, EWS\, in April 2004 and then stored at Toton until the Stratford 47 Group purchased it. \nThe locomotive is mainline registered and often operates away from the Mid-Norfolk Railway. In June 2022\, it was repainted into its current livery\, which celebrated the late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. The repaint of 47580 was carried out inside Dereham Traction & Rolling Stock Restoration & Maintenance Shed\, which was built with the support of the EU Leader Funding Rural Development Programme (Project Ref. 109532).  \nThe Mid Norfolk Railway announced in November 2024 that it was purchasing 47580 and its sister\, 47596\, from the Stratford 47 Group. Macintyre and Connor Clark\n \nClass 09 09004\nBR 0-6-0 Diesel Electric 09004 is a Class 09 Shunting Locomotive. Built at Darlington in 1959\, it spent most of its working life on the South Eastern and Central Divisions of the Southern Region of British Railways.\n\nWhilst visually resembling the more numerous Class 08 shunter\, Class 09s have different gearing\, which allows for a higher top speed of around 27mph\, but at the expense of reduced tractive effort. \nWhen British Rail was privatised in 1996\, the loco passed to Connex South Central (predecessor of today’s train operator Southern). Following an accident in 1998\, the loco was sent to Selhurst Depot. \nIt was acquired for preservation in December 2000 and first operated at the Lavender Line before being moved to the Spa Valley Railway in 2003\, where it remained a resident locomotive until 2009. 09004 was a regular on our passenger trains and shunting operations along with Class 12 15224 and former resident Class 10 D3489 ‘Colonel Tomline’. The 09004s were then owned by a group at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway\, and they were sold again in 2022 to Valley Rail Preservation\, subsequently moving to the Avon Valley Railway\, where they resided until recently. The 09 has been relocated to the Spa Valley Railway for at least one year of service and will primarily be used on engineering trains and shunting duties. DESCRIPTION:COMMEMORATING 40 YEARS SINCE CLOSURE OF THE TUNBRIDGE WELLS CENTRAL TO ERIDGE LINE \n\n\nHaving initially survived closure during the 1960s\, the famous Beeching Axe\, the line between Tunbridge Wells Central and Eridge soldiered on for passengers until 6 July 1985. \nBack then\, the line was home to the `Thumpers’ and our preserved example\, Class 207 1317\, operated on that last day paired with another (1311)\, and together they formed the last shuttle service from Eridge to Tunbridge Wells West. \n40 years later\, we’re turning back the clock and marking the occasion with 1317 in use alongside our steam and heritage diesel trains. The tunnel will be open from 10am to 5pm for visitors to explore and walk through the most significant piece of infrastructure on the Cuckoo Line. The last time a steam train passed through was almost exactly 60 years ago! There will be a small charge payable at the tunnel on the day\, £1 per adult and 50p per child to walk through as a charitable donation to help cover the costs of opening the tunnel.” \nThe original Heathfield station building has been converted into a café. \nA combined All Day Travel ticket with Heathfield Tunnel entry is also available to purchase from the railway’s website. \nHow to get to the Heathfield Tunnel? \nA dedicated free rail replacement bus service will operate between Tunbridge Wells West Station and Heathfield every 50 minutes courtesy of the Bromley Bus Group. Drivers nicknamed it the Cuckoo Line from a tradition observed at the annual fair at Heathfield\, a station on the route. At the fair\, which was held each April\, a lady would release a cuckoo from a basket\, it being supposedly the ‘first cuckoo of spring’. \nThe Cuckoo Line was built by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) in two sections\, starting with the branch from Polegate to Hailsham\, which opened to traffic on 14 May 1849. It diverged from the Eastbourne to London line at Polegate and ran northwards to the market town of Hailsham\, which was the terminus for 31 years until the line through to Eridge was completed and opened in September 1880. \nThe line then passed through the villages of Hellingly (where the electric Hellingly Hospital Railway once operated)\, Horam\, Heathfield\, Mayfield\, Rotherfield & Mark Cross\, then joined the Oxted Line at Redgate Mill Junction before arriving at Eridge. The route continued what is now the Spa Valley Railway\, leaving the Oxted Line at Birchden Junction\, heading for Groombridge\, High Rocks Halt and eventually Tunbridge Wells West. \nFollowing the famous Beeching Report in 1963\, the line was recommended for closure. The section from Eridge to Hailsham was closed to passenger traffic on 14th June 1965\, with the section between Heathfield and Hailsham remaining open for freight until 1968. The remaining stub of the branch line from Polegate to Hailsham remained open until 8thSeptember 1968. \nThe line between Eridge and Tunbridge Wells West remained open until 1985 and\, of course\, was reopened in 1997 as the Spa Valley Railway. \nVisiting Locomotives: \nSouthern Railway U Class 31806 – Courtesy of the Swanage Railway & JMB Locomotive Services \n31806 is the only survivor of the U-class locomotives that were built initially as K-class 2-6-4ts. It was originally built at Brighton as A806 “River Torridge” in 1926\, but following the accident at Sevenoaks\, it was rebuilt as a U-class 2-6-0 at Brighton in 1928. \nAfter entering traffic at Guildford\, it soon moved to Nine Elms early in 1929. It remained at Nine Elms until the late 1930s\, when it moved to Basingstoke and then Guildford by the beginning of 1945. After withdrawal from service in January 1964\, having covered 970\,103 miles\, it was stored at Fratton before going to the scrapyard at Barry Island in June 1964. \n31806 was purchased by John Bunch in 1975\, and it left Barry in October 1976\, moving to the Mid Hants Railway. The restoration began in 1979\, and the locomotive returned to steam in April 1981. Following another overhaul\, the locomotive re-entered service in 2011\, and it moved to the Swanage Railway in 2014\, where it can regularly be seen pulling trains along the Purbeck Line. https://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/ \nPhoto of 31806 above is courtesy of Sharpthorne Steam \nBritish Railways Ivatt 2MT Tank 41313 \nIvatt tank 41313 is returning for another visit to the Spa Valley\, courtesy of our friends at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. \n41313 is an example of the Class 2 2-6-2 tank locomotive designed by George Ivatt for the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). The locomotive was based at Three Bridges for a short time in 1953 before transferring to Faversham\, Kent. At that time\, it may have hauled trains along the line to Tunbridge Wells West\, and sister Ivatt tank 41319 operated along the Cuckoo Line. The locomotive was withdrawn in June 1965\, and its visit to us coincides with 60 years since it was withdrawn from service. \nSold to Woodham Brothers scrap merchants in February 1966\, 41313 was towed to their yard at Barry Docks\, South Wales\, where it was to stay until purchase by the Ivatt Trust in 1975. It was decided that the engine should be restored to working order\, and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway was chosen as a suitable location for 41313’s future operation. 41313 was moved to Havenstreet in August 2006 and\, in 2014\, underwent an extensive overhaul at the East Somerset Railway. The locomotive returned to steam in 2017 and has since been a regular performer at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. \nPhoto of 41313 above is courtesy of David Cable \nBritish Railways Standard 4MT Tank 80078 – Courtesy of Stewart Robinson \n80078 was built at Brighton at a cost of £17\,364 and entered service in February 1954. It was based on the Eastern Region\, working on the London\, Tilbury and Southend Line (LT&S)\, working commuter services out of London until that route was electrified in 1962. In July 1962\, it came under Western Region ownership when it moved to Shrewsbury and later on to Croes Newydd at Wrexham. While at Croes Newydd\, it passed to London Midland Region ownership when Croes Newydd (along with Shrewsbury) was transferred to the London Midland Region in September 1963. \nThe locomotive was withdrawn in March 1965 and sent to Barry Island the following year. It was saved and restored to operational service by the PROJECT 78 group and Southern Locomotives Limited for its first operational period in preservation before being sold to Stewart Robinson in 2012. After a major overhaul\, the 4MT returned to service in 2017 and has visited the Spa Valley Railway regularly ever since. We are incredibly grateful to Stewart for enabling the visit of 80078 once again for this gala. 80078 will be appearing throughout the weekend as other Standard 4MT tanks. \nPhoto of 80078 above courtesy of David Cable \nClass 33 D6566 – Courtesy of the Diesel Electric Preservation Group (DEPG) \nD6566 is a member of a class of 98 “Type 3” locomotives\, later known as “Class 33”\, that were designed and built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company (BRCW) in Smethwick\, West Midlands\, in the period 1960 to 1962. Our locomotive entered service on the Southern Region (SR) of BR in August 1961. The locomotive class is a diesel-electric design concept and was the first design to incorporate dual braking (air and vacuum) and electric train heating (ETH) as standard equipment. The same class as Spa Valley Railway residents 33063 and 33065 owned by the South East Locomotive Group. \nD6566 worked mixed traffic on the SR for 34 years until withdrawal in 1995. After a two-year period in storage\, it was condemned as surplus to requirements in 1997. Acquired almost immediately by one of the D&EPG founder members\, the locomotive arrived at Williton in May 1997. The locomotive first worked a train on the West Somerset Railway in October of that year\, marking the first use of a (subclass) Class 33/0 in preservation. \nD6566 was stopped for an overhaul in 2013 after 16 solid years of service. The overhaul included engine work and major bodywork repairs\, and the locomotive returned to service in 2018\, resplendent in its original two-tone green livery but with the small yellow warning panel at each end. This popular and reliable locomotive continues to serve the West Somerset Railway\, and we are incredibly grateful to the Diesel Electric Preservation Group\, the WSR and the owner for enabling this rare visit away of the ‘Crompton’ for our historic event! It is the first time D6566 will be seen away from the WSR in preservation. DESCRIPTION:Step into Spring and Fundraise for Heart of Kent Hospice with a Sponsored Bluebell Walk \nThe first signs of spring are beginning to show which means the much-loved annual Bluebell Walk event planned for Sunday 4 May 2025 will soon be taking place in aid of Heart of Kent Hospice in Aylesford. \nSign up to take part in the six-mile Sponsored Bluebell Walk and get a free Heart of Kent Hospice branded water bottle. Plus\, raise £50 for the hospice\, through sponsorship and receive your own Bluebell Walk t-shirt! \nReturning as headline sponsors for this event will be Kent based med-tech manufacturer Bedfont and their strategic partners NewMed Ltd who together will be joint sponsors for this annual charity event. \nThe Sponsored Bluebell Walk will offer a choice of picturesque routes including the longer six-mile ramble which takes in the stunning bluebells in the enchanting woodland on the North Downs.  There will also be a route which bypasses the stiles at Lower Dean Farm.  A decision on which route to take can be made whilst on the walk. Both routes take walkers amongst the beautiful bluebells and woodland. \nCold drinks will be on offer at the two-mile mark\, four-mile mark and a designated picnic spot. The Field of Memories features at the picnic spot is somewhere to visit and remember a loved one. \nThe Bluebell Walk is perfect for all the family and there will also be an additional one-mile route which is perfect for little legs and those who prefer to enjoy a shorter one-mile route. \nAll the routes are dog friendly so why not bring your four-legged friends along too.  You can even purchase a Heart of Kent Hospice dog bandanas when signing up to take part. \nWhen buying a fundraising ticket\, you are pledging to raise funds for Heart of Kent Hospice\, which will help the charity to continue supporting those at the end of their lives and their families. All sponsorship pledges should be sent to the Hospice by Wednesday 4 June 2025. \nThe route starts from Harrietsham Village Hall\, Church Rd\, Harrietsham\, Maidstone\, Kent ME17 1AP. \nHospice Events Manager Maisie Bass said: “We are thrilled to welcome back our longest-running event this year\, the Bluebell Walk. We look forward to participants joining us for a 6-mile walk through stunning scenery\, as they cherish the memories of their loved ones. With the unwavering support and generosity of our local community\, we are confident that we will achieve our goal of raising £70\,000\, to enable us to continue providing exceptional care to the growing number of local people who rely on our services.” \nAll ages are welcome to take part in the Bluebell Walk but buggies and wheelchairs are not recommended due to uneven terrain and some stiles.  Please note if you are bringing along your dog\, larger dogs may find it difficult to cross some of the stiles and may therefore need to be carried over. \nAdult fundraising entry with a pledge to raise £50 for Heart of Kent Hospice is £7.50.  Children between 2 and 16 are £5 and under 2’s are free.  A family ticket is £20 with a pledge to raise £100. \nThe one-mile family walk (you cannot see the bluebells on this route) with a pledge to raise £20 is £5 for adults. DESCRIPTION:Stride the line Fundraising Event this Weekend on Sunday 2 February will help keep Kent Heritage Railway Open \nThe popular Spa Valley Railway in the heart of Tunbridge Wells needs your help to continue operating into the future as a major bridge on the line comes to the end of its life. \nSTRIDE THE LINE! is the first fundraising initiative to help raise money for the Broom Lane Bridge Appeal.  Join in a 5-mile sponsored walk this weekend through the beautiful High Weald countryside on Sunday 2nd February and help raise money to replace Broom Lane Bridge!  The walk will discover parts of the Spa Valley Railway that are never open to the public between Tunbridge Wells West and Groombridge via Birchden Junction.  \nMeet at 8:30am at Tunbridge Wells West station\, setting off at 9:30am for Birchden Junction before turning around at the Junction to return to Groombridge. DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Find Out More Days!\nAre you interested in volunteering at the Spa Valley Railway and unsure how to do so? Why not come along to one of our Find Out More sessions? \nThe first one for 2025 is on Saturday 25 January 2025!  \nThere is no need to register or send us an email first; just come along to meet one of our volunteers at Tunbridge Wells West station at 10:30\, and you’ll be taken on a guided tour of the Spa Valley Railway\, showing you all the various parts of the railway and where and how you can get involved volunteering with us. We will provide the opportunity for you to ask questions about various roles and anticipate the session to finish around 14:00. \nYou must be 16 or over to volunteer. If you know someone aged 14-16 who wants to volunteer\, they can attend a Find Out More Day\, but they must have a parent or registered guardian with them who is then prepared to volunteer with them and act as their direct supervisor until they turn 16. We cannot\, for safety reasons\, permit those under the age of 16 to volunteer in any roles unsupervised\, nor are we able to provide direct supervision for this scenario ourselves.  \nWe look forward to seeing you on Saturday\, 25th January at 10:30! We’re calling on you to sleuth it out and find the murderer over afternoon tea on board one of our heritage trains! This service is scheduled to be hauled by both a steam locomotive and a heritage diesel locomotive. \n\n\nPerformed by a regular group of professional actors including: Abi Harris\, Radley Mason and Max Day you can come along to try your hand at solving a murder\, it is up to you to find out whodunnit and you might even win a prize! \nThe mystery starts at Tunbridge Wells West station with a briefing at 13:15 sharp\, then we transfer to our train where the story gets more interesting as the afternoon draws in.
