SUMMARY:Prehistoric Roars at the Spa Valley Railway on Dinosaur Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Dinosaur Weekend!  26th September and 27th September 2026\n\n\nThe Dinosaur Express!\nThe dinosaurs\, which roamed the earth over 66 million years ago\, are back\, and they’re coming back to the Spa Valley Railway this Summer\, and all children aged 0-15 years travel free of charge! \nWith the help of their rangers\, you can get up close and interact with a selection of life-like dinosaurs from giant to tiny at Tunbridge Wells West on the train\, as the dinosaurs mix with the steam and heritage diesel on board our 1960s carriages. \nA variety of dinosaurs\, large and small\, will appear throughout the day between 10:30 and 16:30 for 20 minutes at a time\, and a baby dinosaur will be roaming the train\, too! \nDuring the visits of the dinosaurs\, our steam and heritage diesel trains follow our standard timetable. Did dinosaurs roam through the High Weald all those billions of years ago? \n\n\n\n\nDinosaur Apperance Times:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTeenage Dinosaur!\nThe lively Teenage Dinosaur will appear at intervals throughout the day. Get up close and personal at our station\, including plenty of photo opportunities to have with them and their keeper. The blinking of the eyes\, the opening of their jaw revealing the teeth\, make sure you haven’t any food in your hands as you might go hungry whilst they’re eating your lunch!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVelociraptor!\nThe biggest dinosaur you’ll see during your visit is the Velociraptor! Whilst the teeth are large\, this dinosaur is friendly and would love to meet you and share a photo. Watch out for your sandwiches\, though\, you never know how hungry they are!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTake a steam train ride too!\nTake a ride behind a real steam locomotive between Tunbridge Wells West and Eridge during your visit. DESCRIPTION:The 15th Beer and Cider Festival at the Spa Valley Railway in October 2026 \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKent’s biggest Real Ale and Cider festival takes place next week between Thursday 15 October and  Sunday 18 October 2026 and is the perfect location to celebrate the very best in local and national brewing with some great live music and freshly cooked food to accompany your pint. \nTo support this wonderful volunteer run railway in the heart of Tunbridge Wells\, you can also purchase a train ticket to enjoy a journey on one of the magnificent steam trains! You won’t go thirsty on the trains as the buffet cars will have their bars set up on board with four cask ales from Pig & Porter Brewery. \nThe main beer festival and live music take place in the historic Victorian Engine Shed at the Spa Valley Railway’s\, Tunbridge Wells West Station. \nThe festival will have an incredible 220 Real Ales\, including 36 Kent Green Hop varieties\, 14 Keg Beers\, and 78 Ciders.  To help with the anticipated demand beers will include some from as far north as the Scottish Highlands\, deep in Wales\, all the way down to Cornwall and the Isle of Wight. \nTrains operating on the day include the magnificent steam engines Bulleid Pacific 34053 ‘Sir Keith Park’\, BR Standard 4MT 80078 and Caledonian Railway No. 828.  Operating alongside the steam engines will be Class 25 25185\, Class 31 31430 ‘Sister Dora’ and Class 33/0 33063 ‘R.J.Mitchell’\, \nBUY A BEER FOR BROOM LANE! \nAt the Beer Festival you can choose to buy a beer for Broom Lane and donate just £5 towards a £400\,000 fundraising appeal to replace an old Victorian Bridge located halfway between High Rocks and Groombridge\, known as Broom Lane Bridge.  Broom Lane Bridge is the largest and most expensive project the railway has ever faced in its history and it needs be replaced in February and March 2026.   The current fundraising target stands at £71\,000. \nFestival Highlights \n\nEnjoy 168 Cask Ales at Tunbridge Wells West\, 18 at Groombridge\, and 30 at Eridge\, including 36 Green Hop options\nSample 54 Ciders at Tunbridge Wells West\, 10 at Groombridge\, and 10 at Eridge\, with an additional four ciders available on the trains\nLive music at all three stations\nBuy a train ticket and enjoy a journey and a pint along the Spa Valley Railway between Tunbridge Wells West to Eridge\nFood options to enjoy with your pint: Fullers Butcher BBQ\, Khao Thai Food Stand and Holly’s Cakes at Tunbridge Wells West.  Pizzas will be available at Groombridge Station and food from Reynolds family catering at Eridge station\n\nEntry and Discounts\nEntry to the stations is free\, although charges apply for train travel and food and drink. DESCRIPTION:Gardens to Visit in East Sussex\nWhere to see Lavender Gardens in Sussex \nLavender will again takes centre stage in the medicinal Garden at Merriments from late May 2027. \nThe scent and colour of lavender are filling Merriments Gardens this summer\, as the Medicinal Garden comes into full bloom with drifts of fragrant purple flowers around its tranquil water rill. \nVisitors can now enjoy one of the garden’s most atmospheric seasonal highlights\, with lavender bringing its distinctive perfume\, silvery foliage and nectar-rich flowers to the four-acre East Sussex garden. \nLong valued for its calming fragrance and loved by gardeners for its resilience in sunny\, well-drained positions\, lavender is bringing a classic summer spectacle to the garden while providing a rich source of nectar for wildlife. \nThe lavender is also playing an important role in Merriments’ wildlife-friendly approach. Grown as part of the garden’s organic\, pesticide-free planting\, it is helping attract pollinators including bees and butterflies\, while adding scent\, texture and colour for visitors to enjoy. \nThe lavender display comes as Merriments welcomes 30\,000 bees from Sussex-based specialist R and R Bees\, a small business that breeds bees\, including queens. The new arrivals\, Buckfast bees known for their prolific honey production\, have settled into two new hives – and within just a month\, the colony is expected to double to around 60\,000. \nDan Warne\, Head Gardener and beekeeper\, said: “Lavender is one of the great sensory plants of summer. It brings scent\, colour and movement to the Medicinal Garden\, and it is wonderful for pollinators. As our bees are a small colony\, we are focused on building up their numbers this year\, but they are doing so well we are expecting our first honey harvest this year. We hope to harvest around 100lbs of honey next year\, which we will either sell or use in the Merriments Conservatory Café.” \nSummer is the perfect time to experience the lavender at Merriments and uncover this garden gem. Just off the A21 near Hurst Green\, Merriments is easy to find and packed with reasons to visit. \nNow owned by Caravan Tech\, the well-established family-run business that relocated from its previous site in Hurst Green to this idyllic countryside setting\, Merriments has entered an exciting new chapter. \nSince the acquisition\, the gardens have benefited from extensive renovation and improvement\, including the opening of a new eatery known as the conservatory. Visitors can now enjoy a relaxed day out that combines a leisurely stroll through the gardens with food and drink in the Merriments Conservatory café\, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating. \nHead Gardener Dan Warne\, alongside his team and dedicated volunteers\, has brought fresh energy to the four-acre site\, restoring water features and introducing vibrant new flower beds. \nThe gardens are open daily throughout the year Monday – Saturday: 8:30am-4:30pm.
