Born in 1905, in Crich, Derbyshire, Denys Bower was a passionate if eccentric collector who led an extraordinary life. In 1955 he bought Chiddingstone Castle for £6,000 and opened it to the public to display his unique and very special collections. Beginning with stamps, he collected a wide range of objects and finally settled on four key areas – Japanese, Buddhist, Ancient Egyptian, Stuart & Jacobite. He left the Castle and Collections to the nation and a charitable trust was established to continue opening to the public.
