All aboard the Santa Specials at the Kent & East Sussex Railway

Take a magical steam train journey to meet Santa this Christmas on the railway’s popular Santa Specials. At Tenterden Station the beautiful Victorian carousel provides unlimited free rides for the young and young at heart alike. There will also be a delightful miniature Christmas model village to stroll round at Tenterden Station.

On board the festively decorated steam trains, you’ll meet Santa during the 1 hour 10 minute return journey. Look out for his elf helpers with their sacks full of lovely presents – every child receives an age appropriate gift from Santa himself whilst teenagers (13 to 15) receive a scrummy box of festive chocolates. Everyone receives complimentary refreshments too – a mince pie and choice of soft or alcoholic drink for adults and a soft drink & chocolate bar for children. Babies under 18 months of age at the time of travel are free of charge (providing they are not occupying a seat) and there’s a little free gift for them too!  Every family will also receive a free family group photograph to take home as a momento of the very special day.

The Santa Specials will operate on 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24 December 2017.

The licensed restaurant at Tenterden will be serving Christmas lunches, sandwiches and other tempting lunchtime snacks or why not enjoy a delicious local hot dog or burger from the BBQ.

Take a Spine Tingling ride on the Fright Night Express and enjoy Spell Binding Adventures this Halloween at the Kent & East Sussex Railway

Halloween High Jinx event Tuesday 24 October to Thursday 26 October 2017

Have a fun day out at Tenterden’s Steam Railway this Halloween with a relaxing return train journey between Tenterden and Bodiam stations hauled by a heritage steam or diesel engine and enjoy all the free family-friendly events including ‘Mr Mystery’ magic show and pumpkin carving.  Why not arrive in fancy dress and visit our face painters to complete your scary look!  At Bodiam station passengers can alight to see the exhilarating birds of prey flying demonstrations where birds dive and swoop over the station with Bodiam Castle in the background.   There will be two flying demonstrations each day lasting approx. 30 minutes.  Train travel and events are all included with the purchase of a Travelcard.

When purchased in advance online TravelCards are: Family £36.20, Adult £16.20, Child (3-15) £10.80.  When purchased on the day TravelCards are: Family £38, Adult £18, Child (3-15) £12.   The green timetable will be in operation during October half term with both steam trains and the heritage diesel observation train.   See the website for details

On Friday 27 October ride the Fright Night Express if you dare! Fireworks at Northiam

Visit the railway from 4:30pm for a Fright Night workshop including pumpkin modelling and facepainting. Families are encouraged to come in fancy dress, the scarier the better!

Spooky music and an amazing live Firebreather will add to the atmosphere before everyone boards the Fright Night Express in time for a 6:30pm departure.  

Children will receive a Munchbox during the journey.   Hotdogs or hot snacks will be available to purchase from the licensed restaurant to eat in or take on the train.

Upon arrival at Northiam station enjoy a firework display before the return journey to Tenterden which will see the train arrive back at the station for approximately 8:15pm.

The railway is proud to boast a specially designed coach for wheelchair users called ‘Petros’ which is fitted with ramped access, wide aisles, an accessible toilet and moveable seating.

There is full wheelchair access to the shop and restaurant at Tenterden Town and the Colonel Stephens Railway Museum has level access with 42”aisles.


Chiddingstone Castle Christmas Fair 2017

Chiddingstone Castle’s annual Christmas Fair will take place on Saturday 25 November 2017 between 10am and 4pm.  Admission £5.

Choose your ideal festive gifts from over 60 beautifully laid out stalls in the Castle’s historic rooms and marquee.  Mulled wine and mince pies will add to the seasonal cheer!

The beautiful countryside location of this lovely Castle is perfect for a relaxed shopping opportunity with many stalls selling unique products that are not found in the High Street. Both the Castle and marquee will be brimming with Christmas gifts ideas including home accessories, vintage wares, jewellery, books, cards, slate and lacquer goods, bags, children’s clothes, locally-produced food and drink, soaps, candles, cards and much more.

For a restorative tea or coffee, visitors can visit the cosy Tea Rooms which will also be serving homemade soup, sausage rolls and cakes.  The grounds of the Castle will be open for a peaceful stroll to the Victorian Orangery or around the lake.

Chiddingstone Castle School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Enjoy the magic of Chiddingstone Castle’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!  During half term week Thursday, Friday and Saturday 26, 27 and 28 October – 11am to 1.30pm or 2 to 4.30pm.  

Meet the School’s Headmaster Wizard on arrival and be ‘sorted’ into your house.  Then attend special classes of Potion Making, Choir Practice, Spell School and, of course, the Flying School too!

Real wizards and witches (well, real theatrical performers!) will be here to make sure you experience an amazing day!  

The Castle will be closed to usual visitors on these special days – but young witches and wizards will be able to explore the fascinating rooms within the Castle as part of their special school day! 

The Castle’s Tea Room will be open for light refreshments throughout the day.  There’ll also be a fancy dress competition and certificates for all students.  Pre-booked tickets are essential and all information and ticket sales will soon be available online from the Castle’s website. For children aged 7-12.  Tickets £12 per child; £10 per accompanying adult; Family Ticket £40 – 2 children/2 accompanying adults or 3 children/1 accompanying adult; Party Ticket £120 – 10 children/2 accompanying adults.
