Scotney

/

Owned by the National Trust, Scotney is a hidden gem and one of the most romantic gardens in England. This stunning picturesque garden provides a unique backdrop for a fairytale 14th C moated ruined castle. From early in the year snowdrops appear, then swathes of primroses and daffodils cover the lawns sweeping down to the moat, whilst sweet smelling drifts of Bluebells line the driveway. Magnificent Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Scotney’s famous Kalmia Latifolia follow, and, as summer progresses, the breathtaking fragrant white wisteria lazily rambles along the walls of the ruined castle. Finally, the season comes to a close with the rich autumnal hues of reds and golds from Liquidambers and Japanese Maples in the garden, coupled with the glorious vibrancy of the newly restored quarry garden and surrounding estate with its ancient parkland and meadows.

The house, until recently the home of the Hussey family, is being opened in stages, with a few selected rooms open this summer. Visitors can see how the house has adapted over the years to accommodate three generations of one family and the need for modern living.
